Mistral opens its biggest AI model to teams ready to run it
Large 4 gives organizations more control over deployment, with substantial hardware needs and a restricted open-weight license.

Companies handling sensitive source code and internal documents have a practical reason to want AI on infrastructure they control. Mistral has released the downloadable weights for Mistral Large 4, giving those teams a model they can inspect, adapt and operate themselves. The model, nicknamed Le Chonk, combines text and image input with text output. Its mixture-of-experts design routes work through selected parts of a roughly one-trillion-parameter network. That lets it draw on a large collection of learned capabilities while activating a fraction of the network for each token, the pieces of text a model processes. Developers can choose low, medium or high reasoning effort for different workloads. Official model card
Mistral emphasizes coding and defensive cybersecurity, including investigating vulnerabilities and preparing patches. It says additional training since the preview improved those capabilities and reduced the amount of generated text needed for some tasks. Those are supplier-reported results. Self-hosting is a serious infrastructure project. The official deployment examples use eight GPUs, putting the full model in the territory of well-equipped organizations. Hosted access through Mistral's API offers another route for developers who want to evaluate it. Official model card
The license also deserves a close read. It permits use and modification. Licensees whose own business or affiliates operate Model-as-a-Service need a separate commercial agreement for commercial use; internal use is exempt. The immediate change is greater operational choice: capable coding and security AI that an organization can download and tailor, provided it can support the infrastructure and comply with the license.
