Enphase Tests a Shorter Power Conversion Path for AI Racks
A laboratory system converted 13.8-kilovolt AC to 800-volt DC through changing loads. Rated-power and megawatt-scale validation remain future milestones.

The electrical demand of an artificial intelligence (AI) computing rack can change faster than a steady power rating suggests. When processing activity changes, the equipment supplying the rack must respond while keeping voltage within its required range. Enphase said on October 27 that a laboratory assembly of 132 power modules converted 13.8-kilovolt alternating current (AC) to a stable 800-volt direct current (DC) output during load steps intended to simulate those demands. 1
AC changes direction periodically; DC supplies a consistent polarity. A conventional power path can involve voltage reduction, conversion between current types and further conversion near the computing equipment. Each stage has losses and produces heat. Enphase’s IQ Solid-State Transformer, or IQ SST, is being developed to shorten that chain by converting medium-voltage AC to the higher-voltage DC supply envisaged for future racks. Fewer stages offer a route to reducing losses, but the result depends on how the complete installation performs. 2
The laboratory architecture divided the input voltage among 44 series-connected modules on each of three phases. Enphase says distributed controls balanced the sharing and coordinated their response to load changes. That coordination is the substance of the demonstration: multiple devices must act as a system, rather than leave one module exposed to an excessive share of the voltage or allow the output to drift as demand changes. 1
Voltage conversion and sustained power delivery are different tests. The October release places full rated-power and megawatt-scale system demonstrations in the future, before the end of 2026. It does not supply a measured output obtained by multiplying the number of modules by a module’s rated capacity. Such multiplication would turn component specifications into an experimental result the announcement does not report. The actual delivered power, test duration and thermal conditions are needed to assess sustained operation.
Enphase’s earlier development account identifies insulation, electrical and thermal performance, efficiency, distributed control and redundancy as validation tasks. These are connected requirements. Heat can constrain operation; protection has to respond to faults; redundancy must remain useful when a component stops working. A converter’s best efficiency at one operating point would not describe every combination of load and environmental condition a data center encounters. 2
The company’s October 27 financial release retains customer pilots in 2027 and commercial shipments expected in 2028. Those are roadmap dates. The laboratory result does not establish whole-data-center energy savings, the removal of every backup-power requirement or production availability today. Buyers will need a comparison that includes the remaining conversion equipment, cooling, protection and reliability arrangements, rather than crediting the new converter with benefits outside its measured scope. 3
The near-term checkpoint is therefore a fuller operating record: rated power across relevant load steps, measured losses, temperature behavior and recovery from faults. Customer pilots can then test how the equipment fits a real facility’s power system. Enphase has reported that its modular controls can hold the intended voltage in a laboratory configuration. The next stages must connect that result to the amount of computing load a facility can reliably support.
