AR glasses must guide projected images toward the eye while keeping the optics compact. Wolfspeed announced commercial transparent silicon carbide substrates on October 29, giving device makers another material to develop for that job. Wolfspeed announcement
The company says its material combines low light absorption and flat wafers with a high refractive index for steering light. It also proposes quantum applications. The commercial product is substrate technology; Wolfspeed is advancing 200 mm optical-grade substrates and developing a 300 mm version. Wolfspeed announcement
The next evidence to watch is how customers turn the material into working optical systems, with measured image quality, manufacturing yields and wearable designs.
