Eos Is Shipping More Zinc Batteries. Can Its Factory Make Them Economically?

The company’s preliminary quarterly update points to manufacturing progress, while negative gross margins show the distance still to travel.
For an alternative battery chemistry, getting out of the laboratory is only one hurdle. The next is building enough dependable units at a cost that can support a lasting business.
Eos Energy Enterprises’ October 19 update puts that second challenge in focus. The U.S. zinc-storage manufacturer reported preliminary third-quarter shipments approximately 23% above the previous quarter. Its second production line at Thorn Hill contributed about 17% of battery production and finished the quarter with first-pass yield aligned with Line 1, the company said.
The financial picture remains difficult. Eos expects revenue of $82 million to $83 million and a GAAP gross margin between negative 55% and negative 53%. That margin improved by roughly 16 to 18 percentage points from the previous quarter, but it remains deeply negative.
Line 2 was still operating on a partial-shift schedule. The company’s approximately 4 GWh annual nameplate-capacity figure is an expectation following consolidation and full-scale operations, rather than a measure of current annual output. Full third-quarter results are scheduled for November 5.

WHERE THE BATTERIES ARE MADE
Thorn Hill is in Warrendale, Pennsylvania. Eos announced in August that it would consolidate battery manufacturing there, while retaining Cube assembly, testing and shipping at its Turtle Creek location. The factory transition therefore involves different stages of production, rather than simply moving every activity to one address.

WHO HAS A PROJECT LINED UP?
MN8 Energy provides a specific example. Its September 2 announcement assigns a 10 MW/100 MWh Eos Z3 installation to the Mammoth Solar project in Kanawha County, West Virginia. That pairing represents ten hours of storage at the stated power rating. MN8 will own and operate the project; Google will purchase its energy, capacity and clean-energy attributes.
The schedule is important. Solar operation is expected in 2028, lithium-ion storage in 2029 and the Eos long-duration storage portion in 2030. The announcement establishes a named application, size and intended operating date. It does not demonstrate that the zinc system is already operating or serving as on-site backup at a Google data center.

WHAT ZINC STORAGE DOES DIFFERENTLY
Eos’s Z3 modules use a water-based electrolyte and store energy through zinc deposition. The company describes a sealed design with bipolar electrodes and a polymer casing, aimed at stationary storage applications lasting four to more than 16 hours. Its systems use static battery modules rather than pumps continuously circulating electrolyte through a flow battery.

For a grid operator, that creates a candidate for storing electricity across part of the day and returning it when needed. Selecting a chemistry still requires a complete project comparison: installed cost, usable energy, efficiency, maintenance, footprint and the supplier’s ability to support the equipment.
WHY THE FACTORY NUMBERS MATTER
First-pass yield describes how much production meets requirements without needing rework. If a new line can reproduce an established line’s quality while increasing output, that can reduce waste and labor per usable battery. Eos’s statement is a useful manufacturing signal, although matching another line does not disclose the absolute yield or prove that the overall process is economical.
The negative gross margin supplies an important reality check. At that level, reported cost of revenue exceeds revenue before many other corporate expenses are considered. Higher shipments alone cannot settle the question of commercial sustainability.
There is also a useful distinction between capacity and energy delivered over time. A 100 MWh installation describes storage capacity; the same equipment can discharge that capacity repeatedly. Invinity, a vanadium-flow competitor, said on October 1 that its 10 MWh Viejas installation in California had delivered more than 1 GWh since commissioning in late 2025. That is a vendor-reported operating-project milestone, not a claim that the installation holds 1 GWh at once or proof that one chemistry is cheaper than another.

Eos’s preliminary update gives shipment growth in percentage terms, but no absolute shipped MWh or numerical first-pass yield. Those missing figures would help readers assess how much usable equipment the factories are actually delivering.
The next test is whether better yields and greater utilization translate into sustained cost reductions as output increases. For communities and utilities considering alternatives to lithium-ion storage, that is a more meaningful measure of progress than announced factory capacity alone.
